- The comments from "once performer" sum up my experience here pretty accurately. I'm surprised nothing has changed in 3 years. The nicest thing I can say about the host/crowd/other performers is that I was allowed to play. Past that, they seemed pretty contemptuous of any outsiders.
Anonymous (10/2008)- The don't allow covers
Anonymous (8/2007)- After reading the reviews, my brother and I went out of curiosity. This is now our favorite open mic. The musicans there are great. The sound is awesome and the host is a nice enough guy. Its not the best place to go if you are an attention whore and want the biggest crowd possible, but we have met some of our best musicain friends there. Great place to meet new people and get new ideas.
Gary (5/2006)- This isn't a too bad place. The regulars are pretty cliquey though. I would go every Monday during the summer, but even now when they see me they barely even smile, just give that "I know who you are, and don't give a damn" look. I played a few times and the crowd, while polite and clapping, rarely give you another glance. It's pretty funny when the regulars get pissy at people not paying attention when they're not even in the building for the other artists. Ultimately, it's not a bad place, you've just gotta go in there and really go at it. Just sing and play your boots off.
Once performer (12/2005)- Arriving 15 minutes after the announced start, we worked our way through a gentle gauntlet of z generation priviledged looking to be beat. They clearly lacked the information, experience and social context to pull it off. We were the only people discernably over 25. The guitared and the gathered lined the rails and benches outside and sat on the walk below the front window of this very full storefront coffee bistro next to the Wayne theater. Once we made it to the rear of the room, an incredibly kind young man untangling wires and not yet set up admitted to being the host and directed me to a play list on a counter. We wriggled our way through the crowd and found it only had ten spots on it: They were all full. If you come early and your elbows are in good shape, you should be able to fight the competition to the sign in sheet: Their elbows wore signs of wwear from the last shoe sale at Nieman Marcus and the John Madden 2005 Release at Electronics Boutique.Unable to play, we spent some time conversing with generation z and found them affable and searching. Consider bringing a copy of American Roots Music and the Philadelphia Tribune with you: Appropriate to their age, social position, and desire, this is a crowd lacking in, and thirsting for, a broad based knowledge of music history, and what its like to not be priviledged.
